B-Virtual

Once upon a time there was a young boy that was looking for a virtual outlet on the web. Together with a few colleagues they all started their own websites. But! Wait a second, it all stands with a good name right? Right! So of we went, searching for good names for our sites. And there it was, out of the blue, as a flash of lightning: B-Virtual! Why? Since the web is a virtual place on a cloud of its own and my name starts with a B there it was => B-Virtual. So, years past by, visitors enjoyed this website, postings were done under the name B-Virtual and all went well. I've been active on the web for about 14 years now, I've seen domains come and go, technologies rise and fall, experienced venture capital at its best thanks to HyperTrust and met many interesting people.

But here comes the interesting part of the story. A few months ago I was contacted by someone asking me if I was interested in selling my b-virtual.com domain. My first reaction was no, why should I, it's almost my second name. But they kept asking and I went thinking. Since I live in Belgium and I own both .com, .eu and .be domains I started thinking that I could miss the .com if the price was right. Ok, I here you thinking, here we go, he's going to take advantage of the situation. Not really actually, I made some calculations and found a reasonably low price including fees for new logo designs, email campaigns, branding, ... but the price was seen as to high. No problem for me, I'm not really looking to sell it anyway.

Since I'm into the web, I went looking for more information about the company wanting to buy my domain. I came up with B-Virtual, a Belgian, yes Belgian as in Belgium, company. So do the math with me, a Belgian company wanting my name for their company? It seems as if the people at A-Server weren't really in a creative mood. They just took my name. Maybe it's good marketing, take a name that has a good SEO rating a piggyback on it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against their products, cloud services are the future for some virtual needs. It's just that they were to lazy to search for a fresh and creative name for their brand.

To proof that I'm in favor of them, I'll even advertise their website, since I'm still, at the time of writing, higher ranked in Google ;)

Gezien we tegenwoordig, als Belgen, bijna allemaal met een digitale identiteitskaart rondlopen is het misschien wel eens nuttig om te weten wat we er juist mee kunnen doen. Ja we kunnen tax-on-web gebruiken, dat weten de meesten onder ons. Wat je dan nodig hebt is een kaartlezer. In veel laptops zit dit al standaard in tegenwoordig en anders kan je altijd nog een externe USB kaartlezer aankopen.

Maar wat kan je er nu nog mee, buiten 1 x per jaar je belastingen invullen? Wel, op je identiteitskaart staat iets als een certificaat, dit certificaat is uniek voor elke identiteitskaart en dus uniek voor iedere Belg. Het is een manier om je op internet te identificeren als zijnde jezelf. Dit merk je al als je je kaart in de lezer steekt en je foto op het scherm verschijnt.

Als je nu bv facturen of persoonlijke documenten wil doorsturen via email, waarbij je zeker wil zijn dat jij als afzender kan worden aangeduid, dan kan je deze emails handtekenen of 'signen' met jouw certificaat. Zo weet de ontvanger zeker dat jij de verzender bent van de email en dat de inhoud onderweg niet is gewijzigd. Mocht de inhoud wel zijn gewijzigd onderweg, we zitten ten slotte op het openbare internet, dan vervalt de handtekening en krijgt de ontvanger een waarschuwing dat er met de email geknoeid werd.

Hoe ga je nu te werk? Na enig zoekwerk op de website van eID heb ik volgende pagina gevonden waar er voor verschillende scenario's een handleiding werd voorzien. Dus alle hierheen.

Nu is het alleen nog wachten op de banken opdat ze onze certificaten kunnen aanvaarden als authenticatiemethode ;)

Development pixagogo

It's been a while since I posted my last development blog. I've been kind of busy walking the thing line between development en family life, where development took a great part. But I've found some cool new and existing technologies to put my mind on. The Azure Services Platform is one of them. I've been using "the cloud" for some time now, but not realy from a Microsoft perspective. I admit not being a great Linux supporter but for some cost effective non crucial parts, it's quite ok :)

The things I remember from my TechEd visit was, that it requires a bit of a mind switch to develop against the MS cloud. I'm going to dive deeper into this matter to see what it offers and if it can be any use for me in the future.

Project Velocity on the other hand is one that I'm eager to test, once I have the time for it. Caching is sacred in web architectures. And Velocity looks nice on paper. I hope they can make it happen and are smart enough not to put it under a paying license. There are nice free alternatives available.

Deze morgen heb ik weer een sterk staaltje van 'men oogst wat men zaait' gezien.

Een jongetje, ik schat een jaar of 8, komt op het voetpad aangewandeld, helemaal in het zwart gekleed, met een fluo hesje over zijn boekentas. Zelf ben ik met de wagen en moet ik afremmen omdat ik een kruispunt nader en ik, om de een of andere reden, ook vermoed dat dat jongetje gaat oversteken op het zebrapad.

Nu komt het, meestal staat er aan elk zebrapad een fluo opzichter die bij de minste beweging op straat springt en als een zot met zijn plaatje begint te zwaaien om ons tegen te houden. Nu, die opzichter was er nu dus niet en wat deed het jongetje? Juist, gewoon oversteken zonder ook maar 1 glimp van het verkeer proberen op te vangen. Niks, links, rechts, links kijken zoals het er ons vroeger werd ingeramd, niet even stoppen om te kijken of het wel veilig is om over te steken. Nee, gewoon oogjes op de voetjes focussen en gaan!

Begrijp me niet verkeerd, ik heb met alle plezier dit suïcidaal jongetje over laten gaan. Ik zou het ook telkens weer doen. Maar ik begrijp niet waarom men de opzichters niet beter opleidt. Ipv te springen als er iemand aankomt, kan men deze opzichters misschien de taak geven om de kinderen te leren zelfstandig over te steken en ze te begeleiden. Niet voor hun veiligheid op dat moment alleen maar ook voor hun veiligheid in de toekomst.

Ik vind het zeer erg als ik op het nieuws moet vernemen dat er weer een kindje onder een wagen of vrachtwagen werd gedood. Misschien had het niet gebeurd als hij of zij deel had genomen aan het verkeer ipv te denken dat het verkeer rekening houdt met hen.

News flash, als jij hen niet hebt gezien hebben zij jou misschien ook niet gezien. Vandaar, zien en gezien worden doe je niet alleen met een fluo hesje.

Until now I've been a great fan of italian wines. Wines like Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and the very nice Montefalco Sagrantino secco. Through my parents I now discovered a new very nice french wine Visan. Visan is a very nice and rich red wine from the french Vaucluse. I'm not really into wine as a pro but I can tell that this wine is one that you can put on the table for everyone to like.

So if you ever pass in the Vaucluse in france, don't forget to pass by Domaines des Lauriberts to get you some of this very nice wine.

Gisteren was het de bekendmaking van Site van het Jaar 2008 door Clickx Magazine. Binnen een aantal categoriën werden de beste websites gekozen door internet gebruikers doorheen heel Belgïe. Nu, een aantal van deze websites hebben er bewust voor gekozen om zelf geen reclame te maken onder hun gebruikers. 'Waarom?'

vraagt u zich wellicht af.

Om te stemmen op een van de websites moet u namelijk uw email adres ingeven onder het mom van 'de unieke stem'. En wat is nu net héél veel waard op het internet? Juist ja, uw email adres. Als we nu met z'n allen lekker veel reclame maken onder onze gebruikers om hen aan te zetten om te gaan stemmen voor de Site van het jaar, dan geven we meteen ook al onze gebruikersgegevens weg en verdrinkt iedereen binnenkort al helemaal in de zondvloed aan reclame emails van websites waar u toevallig eens iets hebt ingevuld.

Wel wil ik de winnaars proficiat wensen. Het blijft een mooie marketing waarde hebben naar adverteerders toe natuurlijk.

Some time ago I installed an active holder for my Tomtom GPS and took some photos along the way. So here is a step by step tutorial of how to install a fixed GPS holder in an Alfa Romeo 159.

I used an active Brodit holder together with a brodit mounting bracket to create a clean fixed GPS holder for my Alfa 159.

1. The tools for the job.

2. An extenstion cord for the cigar lighter is going from the cigar lighter right under the steering wheel where it can be placed on top of the air bag. Please not in front of it! ;)

3. I'm using a brodit active holder which has a pretty small extension cord attached. So that is why I used the extension cord and plug it in under the steering wheel.

4. The next thing is removing the left vent by using the 2 hex wrench tools. Put them in the vent just behind the blades in opposite directions. One pointing up, the other one pointing down. And now pull them towards you.

5. Once the vent is out, you need to drill a hole in it. Look at the photo to see where exactly you need to drill it. Be carefull, this is the only location that allows you to keep on using your vent without problems.

6. Remember the extension cord of the Brodit holder? You can detach the holder from the plug so you only have the cable with the small USB plug at the end. You need to fondle the plug from the steering wheel up to the right side of the vent. I have large fingers so that went quite well for me but you need to have some "fingerspitzengefül". The result will look something like this.

7. If you put the plug through the hole and reposition the vent you get this. Sorry for the tools in front :)

8. After reassembling the holder you will have one fine active GPS holder.
